Remington Express Hunter .22

So, today I’m starting a review of the Remington Express Hunter .22. It is a nitro piston break barrel rifle. As we know, Remington air rifles are made by Crosman, and so the typical reliability and quality are there.

First, I want to get into what is a nitro piston, and how does it differ from a regular spring piston. Nitro piston is just the distinction of Crosman brands, and it is simply a gas piston powerplant. Instead of a normal spring being compressed, a cylinder filled with gas (nitrogen) is compressed. This gas propels the piston forward to compress the air behind the pellet. Advantages of this system are that it tends to be lighter, smoother cocking, less noise and vibration, and the ability to leave it cocked for a while, which normally would weaken a spring.

Out of the box, you get a rifle, a scope, a set of scope rings, an Allen wrench for the scope rings, and a couple manuals. First impression upon seeing the rifle is that it’s a quality rifle. It definitely has some weight to it, but it is all centered right near the powerplant, so it feels very balanced. It features an ambidextrous cheekpiece on the stock, fiber optic sights, 11mm dovetail mount, and a manual safety inside of the trigger guard. It has a two stage adjustable trigger.

The sights are nice. We have green fiber optic in the rear, adjustable for windage and elevation, and red fiber optic front sight. I will be using these first to get this rifle shooting good groups. I may mount the scope later, but I find that on these budget air rifles the scopes that come with them usually aren’t too good.

Now, my goal is to review air rifles under $150, so even the budget air gunner can have fun and have functional air rifles. This rifle comes in right around that number. It retails anywhere from $130-$160 depending where you buy it. I bought for just under $100 at Dick’s Sporting Good’s while it was on sale. Just based on first impressions, I think it was a good deal.

Later, I will be testing with my chronograph and testing accuracy. Make sure you come back for that! Also, check out my YouTube channel, where I will be posting the full video reviews of my rifles! Thank you for reading!
